NDIS Funding for Advocacy.

Making your NDIS funding work for you.

At SupportEd Advocacy, we know how confusing NDIS budgets and rules can feel. The below breaks down the basics of Capacity Building funding and shows how self-managed and plan-managed participants can choose the supports and providers that fit best, including our advocacy services.

Choosing How to Manage Your Plan

You can decide how your NDIS funding is managed. Each option offers different levels of control and flexibility:

  • Self-managed: You hold the reins. You decide what supports to buy, who delivers them and when. Self-managed participants can work with registered or unregistered providers and negotiate costs to get the best value. You’ll pay providers directly and keep track of your invoices and receipts.

  • Plan-managed: A plan manager takes care of paying your providers and balancing your budget. Because service bookings made by plan managers can include registered and unregistered providers, you still have plenty of choice. The NDIA even covers the cost of your plan manager, so none of your support funds are lost.

  • NDIA-managed: Sometimes called agency‑managed, this option restricts you to registered providers only. Providers claim payments directly through the NDIA portal. Some families choose this for peace of mind, while others find it limiting.

Understanding Providers

An NDIS provider is anyone, from a sole trader to a large organisation who delivers NDIS-funded supports. Registered providers meet the requirements of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and all providers must follow the NDIS Code of Conduct.

If you self-manage or work with a plan manager, you can choose unregistered providers. That means you can work with community-based specialists like us who offer personalised, flexible services. NDIA-managed participants must use registered providers.

What Are Support Budgets?

Every NDIS plan is divided into different pots of money. Most plans include Core, Capacity Building and Capital budgets.

Capacity Building Categories

Capacity Building funding is where we do our best work. It’s divided into categories like the following:

  • Support Coordination

  • Increased Social & Community Participation

  • Finding & Keeping a Job

  • Improved Relationships

  • Health & Wellbeing

  • Learning

  • Life Choices

  • Daily Living

You can only spend each portion of this budget on the category it’s assigned to. For example, funding for Improved Daily Living might cover sessions for parent coaching, focusing on building the capacity of parents to reduce barriers to education for their child.
